The members of the Preshitha Province started the missionary works in Kenya initiated by the invitation of the Bishop of Meru (Rt. Rev. Silas Njiru) in 1996. Rev. Fr. Paulson Kannanaickal was the first missionary of the Province to Kenya where he was assisting Rev. Fr. Jose Kallely at Mbiuni. He was assisting different parishes and finally came to Magumoni parish assisting Fr. Mbiko. In 1999 he took the full leadership of the parish where the church and presbytery were in a pitiable condition. In the same year Fr. Raphael Kanjirathingal joined the missionary works with Fr. Paulson. They were more interested with the home visits, house blessings, formation of small Christian Communities, movements for Children, youth, men, and women. These movements rejuvenated the pastoral life in Magumoni parish. Their aim as missionaries is to build up the spiritual as well as physical church, to strengthen the faith and to bring up the developments step by step. Before they started the physical developments they prepared the proper foundation for the pastoral activities with available resources. Among the physical advancement, renovation of the presbytery, starting a primary school in the Church campus, welcoming a sisters’ congregation to parish have been accomplished together with the construction of a parish church. Meantime, Fr. Raphael was busy in conducting retreats for people who are familiar with our mother tongue. But he returned to India and Fr. Sebastian Parayil came and joined Fr. Paulson. Next year Fr. George came.

Fr. Alex Ukken was the parish priest in Mikumbune and Fr. George became assistant to him. When Fr. John came to Magumoni in 2003, Fr. Sebastian Parayil was shifted to Mikumbune as the Parish Priest instead of Fr. Alex. In the same year Bishop Silas Njiru appointed Fr. Paulson as Meru Diocesan Consulter and he was the coordinator of the fathers of Preshitha Province working in Kenya. Now Fr. Sebastian is appointed as one of the seven consulters of Meru Bishop as on 14.12.2010.

Regarding the jurisdiction of the activities of the Preshitha Province, the major superiors’ meeting at Bangalore on 24th August 2003 took the following decision. “The whole of Kenya-Madagascar, excluding the dioceses under Nyeri Archdiocese in Kenya may be declared as the extended territory of the present Kenya-Madagascar sub-region under Devamatha Province. The dioceses under Nyeri Archdiocese may be entrusted to Preshitha Province for their missionary activities.

Later Muranga diocese which is under Nyeri Archdiocese was added to the jurisdiction of Devamatha Province, because their novitiate house was there.

A parcel of land at Marimba extending 35 acres was reserved to the CMI Fathers according to the letter of Meru Bishop of 8th November 2002. There we started the following works: a. Holy Angels Academy as nursery class b. One acre of tea plantation c. Development of a dispensary in connection with Consolata Hospital, Nkubu

Marimba land was taken back to Diocese and given to a father to conduct retreat centre. Now its spiritual care is entrusted to us again. The Meru Bishop who invited to his diocese has marked out 5 qualities in our dealings: 1. Good gentleman’s approach as a result of prayer life 2. Personal visits to families enabling to update statistics 3. Establishment of pastoral visitations to Small Christian Communities 4. Close contact with good catholic leaders 5. Pontifical Holy Childhood activities

In 2006 Fr. Rupert arrived in Kenya as the coordinator. The work of presbytery at Mikumbune was completed. So also the construction of the Parish Church at Magumoni was finished. It was officially opened for public worship by the Vice President of Kenya. Fr. Paulson went for Sabbatical year and Fr. John Elavathingal as Father-in-Charge started the work of a new convent building and a multi-purpose hall with additional classrooms for the primary school at Magumoni. Those two projects also are over by now. Many young men and women were given an initiation and sent to different places working as cooks, watchmen, carpenter, etc. A piece of land was set apart at Igamantundu for Chavara Housing Village for poor people. An educational fund was also instituted.

Charismatic renovation of spirit were organized occasionally for elderly people. Novena devotion before the important feasts also was introduced to enliven the spiritual formation among the people. House blessing is another method of approach to meet the non-attenders of Sunday Mass. With regard to the children, the annual CHC Camp is very lively during Christmas holidays. Meru Bishop was escorted by Fr. Sebastian during his itinerary in India and we have contributed for his expenses.

In Mikumbune parish, Fr. Sebastian finished the work of presbytery and organized the primary school under our leadership besides the regular parish works. Now Fr. George was appointed as the Father-in-Charge. Under his leadership the parish activities are conducted very systematically. Regular meetings and seminars for various groups of people are conducted by way of instructive and administrative services. Different devotions are encouraged. Pilgrimages with prayerful attitude are conducted. Daily rosary is recited after mass. Vigils and occasional group prayers are quite common. Parishners supported the presbytery by offering new oven and a refrigerator. Meru Bishop bought 5 acres of land near our church and gave to us so that we may start a good school there. In the Church campus we are already running a primary school which has come up to class IV. We have another primary school at Muchega in the forest area. In both the parishes of Meru Diocese all of us including the new priests say Holy Mass and administer sacraments in plenty according to the local customs.

At Naromoru, the Nyeri Archbishop had donated 20 acres of land which has been received with legal documents so that we can use it until we leave the place (ad usum). It is a portion of a big land owned by Archdiocese but not used for many years. We have built a house consisting of six self-contained rooms and three big halls. It has been raised as a residence of Preshitha Province by the Provincial Council. Frs. Rupert and Sebastian are staying there. A family renewal programme was organized there. Different kinds of tuition activities were conducted and the participants got good results in the succeeding exams. We plan to accommodate initially the candidates who would join the congregation in that house. Fr. Rupert had gone to Germany for a fund raising programme. There are facilities for extensive cultivation in that land. Recently a big water tank was constructed for providing drinking water to the local people and for the use of agriculture. A Christmas celebration was done for children of the locality. Slowly we go down to the local milieu to strengthen the Christian faith and family reorientation programmes.

At Embu we bought about six acres of land for the Province. Generous financial helps from our houses are specially remembered. Fr. John has started to construct a building for nursery and primary classes. All the government permissions were obtained. The water connection is already done. We plan to start the classes in the coming 2011 itself. We gratefully remember the different kinds of encouragement offered to us.

This year the presence of Fr. Xaviour and the two newly ordained priests increased the efficiency of the Mission work especially going deep in the activities. The new priests with their special aptitudes tried to approach the people with originality and creative tastes. Fr. Xaviour was appointed as the Father-in-Charge of Magumoni Parish and Fr. Joy is assisting Fr. George at Mikumbune. Fr. Joseph Kovathuparambil was called by Fr. Prior General for studying German language to work in Germany for Kenyan mission. We joyfully remember the fraternal visit of Fr. Prior General, Frs. Jose Kuriedath, Varghese Kokkadan and George Thanchan and the cordial company of Frs. Provincial, Joy Kolengaden, Thomas Cheeran and few of our other fathers.
